Stick Art
🎨 1. Focal Point (What draws your eye first?)
In composition, you usually want a clear subject.
👉 In this image:
- The little girl in the center is the focal point.
- Why?
- She’s placed in the middle
- She’s slightly smaller → creates emphasis by contrast
- The parents on both sides frame her
✅ Lesson:
Use placement + surrounding elements to guide attention.
⚖️ 2. Balance (Symmetrical vs. Asymmetrical)
👉 This image uses symmetrical balance:
- Mother on the left, father on the right
- Trees on both sides
- Clouds distributed evenly
Even the dog helps “balance” the right side visually.
✅ Lesson:
- Symmetry = calm, stable feeling
- Asymmetry = more dynamic, energetic
📐 3. Rule of Thirds (and when it’s broken)
Normally, artists place subjects along imaginary thirds.
👉 Here:
- The child is centered instead of off to one side
This breaks the rule—but works because:
- It reinforces the idea of family unity
- The composition is intentionally simple and direct
✅ Lesson:
Rules are tools—not laws. Break them on purpose.
➡️ 4. Leading Lines
Leading lines guide the viewer’s eye.
👉 In this drawing:
- The arms of the parents lead inward toward the child
- The ground line subtly anchors everything
Your eye naturally moves:
Parent → child → parent
✅ Lesson:
Use lines (even implied ones) to direct attention.
🎯 5. Framing
Framing uses elements to “contain” the subject.
👉 Here:
- The parents physically frame the child
- Trees on both sides create an outer frame
This creates a feeling of:
- Protection
- Focus
- Unity
✅ Lesson:
Framing strengthens the importance of your subject.
🌈 6. Color Harmony
👉 Notice the colors:
- Warm colors: orange (mother), pink (child)
- Cool color: blue (father)
- Natural greens and sky tones
This creates:
- Variety without chaos
- Emotional warmth
✅ Lesson:
Use limited, balanced color palettes for clarity.
☀️ 7. Use of Space (Negative Space)
Negative space = empty areas.
👉 In this image:
- The sky is mostly empty
- This keeps the focus on the family
No clutter = stronger composition.
✅ Lesson:
Don’t fill everything—space helps your subject stand out.
🧠 8. Visual Storytelling
Composition also communicates meaning.
👉 What this image says:
- Central child = importance
- Holding hands = connection
- Sun + bright colors = happiness
Composition supports the story:
👉 “A happy, balanced family.”
✏️ Quick Summary
This simple drawing demonstrates:
- Focal point → center child
- Balance → symmetrical layout
- Leading lines → arms guide the eye
- Framing → parents + trees
- Color harmony → warm + cool contrast
- Negative space → clean background
- Storytelling → unity and happiness
