Forks

March 30, 2026

At various points in every life we come to what might be called a fork in the road.

Sometimes we see the fork clearly. We stand there knowing that whichever direction we choose may shape the years ahead. A decision about a career. A relationship. A move to a different place. In those moments we understand that our choice matters.

But not all forks are chosen.

Some appear suddenly, without warning, created by events completely outside our control. An illness. An accident. The loss of someone we love. In those moments life itself chooses the direction of the road, and we are left to walk it.

Looking back, many of us can identify the forks that quietly reshaped our lives. At the time they may have seemed like isolated events. Only later do we realize that from that moment forward, everything unfolded along a different path.

The stories in this series explore those turning points.

Each story begins with a real moment in my life where the road divided. I describe what actually happened and how life unfolded along that path.

But there is also another road.

Alongside the life that was lived, I imagine the life that might have been if that fork had led somewhere else. What if the event had never happened? What if circumstances had been slightly different? What kind of life might have unfolded then?

Of course, no one can truly know the answer. The imagined path is only a reflection — a way of looking at how much our lives are shaped by both choice and chance.

In the end, the purpose of these stories is not to regret the road taken or the road not taken. Rather, it is to understand how the unexpected turns in life shape who we eventually become.

Every life has its forks.

These are some of mine.
