Some people move through life noticing what is there. Focus Man also notices what might be changed.

From a boyhood in Southern California to friendship, work, love, marriage, and the unexpected turns of later life, Focus Man follows one man who has always had an instinct for seeing how things fit together—and how they might fit together better.

Sometimes that instinct serves him well. Sometimes people are more complicated than the problems he knows how to solve.

But Focus Man is not really a story about solving problems. It is about the ordinary moments that accumulate into a life: a first bicycle ride, a childhood friend, the death of a father, a career left behind, a woman noticed across a crowded room, a house overlooking the Bay, and the people who travel beside us for part—or all—of the road.

Some moments seem important when they happen.

Others become important only when we look back.
