I Need This
There comes a moment in the life of nearly every serious recreational cyclist when the bicycle he already owns—reliable, comfortable, paid for, and perfectly capable of carrying him anywhere his legs can manage—develops a terrible mechanical problem.
It becomes old.
Not broken.
Not worn out.
Old.
This usually happens shortly after entering a bicycle shop.
There, under carefully positioned lighting, sits a machine made almost entirely of carbon fiber, aerodynamic research, and financial irresponsibility.
The cyclist approaches slowly.
“Wow.”
The salesperson recognizes the symptoms immediately.
“Carbon frame. Electronic shifting. Deep-section wheels. Fully integrated cockpit.”
The cyclist nods.
He doesn't actually know what an integrated cockpit does.
But he knows he wants one.
His wife studies the price tag.
$14,999.
She looks at the bicycle.
Then at her husband.
Then at the perfectly good bicycle leaning against the wall behind them.
“Wouldn't losing fifteen pounds be cheaper?”
There are certain observations that, while technically accurate, contribute nothing useful to a discussion.
“That's completely different.”
And it is.
Losing fifteen pounds requires months of restraint, exercise, smaller portions, and occasionally declining pie.
Removing fifteen pounds from your checking account can be accomplished in approximately four minutes.
The salesperson points toward the wheels.
“These alone could save you several watts.”
The cyclist's eyes widen.
Watts.
Cyclists love watts.
Nobody is entirely sure why.
For most of human history, watts were something electricians worried about. Then somebody put a power meter on a bicycle, and suddenly middle-aged accountants began discussing FTP over coffee as though preparing for the Olympic trials.
“How much faster would I be?”
The salesperson considers the question carefully.
“At your average speed, the aerodynamic savings could probably save you almost four seconds on your Saturday ride.”
The cyclist looks impressed.
His wife does the arithmetic.
“Four seconds?”
“Possibly five with the aero socks.”
She notices the Marginal Gains Department.
Carbon bottle cage: $89.
Aero socks: $75.
Ceramic pulley wheels: $699.
Lose five pounds: FREE.
Unfortunately, that item is temporarily out of stock.
The cyclist walks around the bicycle again.
He imagines himself climbing effortlessly through the Cascades. He imagines attacking on the final kilometer. He imagines other cyclists quietly noticing the deep carbon wheels at the coffee stop.
Most importantly, he imagines riding it.
And therein lies the problem.
Because recreational cyclists don't always buy bicycles because they need them.
Sometimes we buy them because bicycles represent possibility.
Another climb.
Another century.
Another summer.
Another reason to get outside on a Saturday morning when staying in bed would be considerably easier.
Will the new bicycle turn us into professional racers?
No.
Will it magically produce another fifty watts?
Probably not.
Will the ceramic pulley wheels change our lives?
Almost certainly not.
But sometimes enthusiasm has value too.
The cyclist finally turns toward his wife.
“I've thought about it carefully.”
She folds her arms.
“And?”
He looks once more at the gleaming carbon bicycle.
“I need this.”
She sighs.
“You absolutely do not.”
He smiles.
And somewhere deep inside the bicycle shop, a credit-card terminal quietly wakes from sleep.
