We need to avoid anger and resentments

A Dubious Luxury

RESENTMENTS

As we continue our journey towards freedom from the bondage of alcoholism, we must confront the poisonous nature of anger and other defects of character that can impede our progress. We learn from our experience and the wisdom of those who have gone before us that these things are best left to nonalcoholics.

We must recognize that the indulgence in anger, resentment, self-pity, judgmentalism, self-righteousness, false pride, and false humility is a dubious luxury that we cannot afford. These defects are like a grouch and a brainstorm that can lead us astray from the path of recovery. They can rob us of our serenity and prevent us from living a full and meaningful life.

Through the principles of the program, we learn to let go of these defects and embrace a new way of life. We admit our powerlessness and turn our will and our lives over to a higher power. We take a fearless inventory of ourselves and make amends for our wrongs. We seek to improve our conscious contact with God as we understand Him and to carry His message to others who suffer from the disease of alcoholism.

Thanks to the program, we have been given a second chance at life. We are no longer slaves to our defects of character, and we are free to live in the light of a new day. Let us continue to work the program, one day at a time, and be grateful for the gifts of sobriety and serenity that it has given us.
