Oh! My Pa-Pa

In 1947, Daniel N. Stevens, '39, was appointed to the Municipal Court by (then) Governor Warren of California, to become the youngest jurist of a court of record in the State.  In 1950 he was elevated to the Superior Court and 1953 appointed to the Appellate Department.

At the time of his Municipal bench appointment, he was a deputy Attorney General, handling tax matters for the Attorney in Southern California.  Previously, following his graduation from the School of Law, he had served as secretary to the State Supreme Court Justice Douglas Edmonds.

Judge Stevens was president of the Law Alumni Association.  He was also the second president of the Los Angeles chapter of Civitan International, an active member of Elks Lodge 99, the Esteemed Lecturing Knight of the lodge and chairman of the organization's membership committee; a former member of the faculty of the Hastings College of Law of UC and of the San Francisco Law School.

Judge Stevens also served as president of the LA Psychiatric Service, a Community Chest agency, in 1953-54.  A leader in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, he lectured on a regular basis to youth groups.

On Thursday, January 13, Judge Stevens celebrated his 39th birthday.  On Sunday, after a short illness, Judge Stevens died in the Glendale Hospital and Sanitarium, when he had been hospitalized with an attack of pneumonia.

He leaves his widow, Mary Lou; three children, Gary, Gayle, and Geoffrey; his parents, Mr. and Mrs George Stevens, a brother, Dr. Arnold Stevens, and a sister, Mrs. George Douglas.
