Anchorage, Alaska

Fort Richardson - 1967

August 09, 2023

1967 and 1968 were spent at Fort Richardson on the outskirts of Anchorage, Alaska.  This was just a couple of years after the devestating earthquake that hit Anchorage and the damage was still quite visible--sunken streets and damaged downtown buildings.  We were supposed to be there to make sure that our first line defenses against the cold-war Soviets, the Nike Missile System were operational 24/7.  I had some pretty cold nights (35 below) driving electronic parts out to the various batteries on dark and slippery dirt roads in the middle of nowhere.

But, for the most part, it was a positive experience.  I had the opportunity to play golf and ski on Fort Richardson's large reservation.  And quite a few weekends were spent in the spectacular outdoors.  The Chugach Mountains and the Cook Inlet flats provided many adventures during those two years.  And I'm sure it was a much better time than what the boys experienced in Viet Nam.
